When the wind is strong enough, your favorite tree can be dangerous if its branches are overgrown and unruly. The tree can sway and rock excessively in the wind. To reduce the risk of trees breaking in the wind, it’s important to prune them properly. This means removing deadwood and excessive small branches, and minimizing movement that could strain the tree. Allowing wind to safely pass through the tree also helps. When pruning, pay special attention to areas where multiple stems meet, as these spots are weak and more likely to fail.

Structural problems in trees caused by included bark can occur naturally or result from improper pruning methods. For instance, cutting off the top of a tree (also known as topping) can create small branches that are prone to disease and insect infestations, ultimately killing the entire tree. A beautiful storm came through and our 100+ year old walnut tree was caught in a wind tunnel. Unfortunately, it did partially sever one of the main trunks and was hanging on by about 4” of bark that would land on our roof.
